Prabal Gurung Makes Us Feel Patriotic With His SS20 Collection at NYFW
Prabal had one simple question: Who gets to be an American? He answered that in his Ready-to-wear 2020 resort collection. If Gurung were to run for office, consider this collection his opening statement. Gurung converted the radical 80s dress and attire to modern deconstructed art, warping the traditional silhouette of the 80s dress and refashioned the pattern to revive the extensive fashion statements that was the 1980s. He kept the infamous puffy sleeve ( a bold move). Subsequently Gurung threw in a curve ball by mixing athleisure pieces alongside the glam aesthetic, it was diversity at its finest. I interpreted the Napalis Designer’s vision for this collection as a message that their needs to be change to the traditional way of thinking who is “allowed” to be an American.
The show starts off in a blue haze creating a tranquil atmosphere. As the room darkens, the draped tea lights sway like leaves of a willow tree as they hang from the ceiling. The lights mixed in with actual greenery twinkle as if to signal the landing of air force one. The American flags hang dramatically intertwined with the lights.
American Sweetheart neckline
The first model towers over the pews of audience and works the first look; a deconstructed crisp white one shoulder dress. Resembling an 80s wedding dress with one puffy sleeve and the button loops that would usually be on the back of the dress has been repurposed to adorn the front to outline the cutout area of the dress that is met with sweetheart neckline.
Demure Denim
Succeeding the purity of white moment was the patriotic red, white, and blue numbers. Merging athleisure and high glam looks, Prabal curated multiple style from elegance to sport can coexist and be under one united title.
