Oscars 2020 Fashion Report: Looks That Nailed It, and Failed It

The results are in, ladies and gentlemen! The 92nd Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday, February 9 in Hollywood, and we’ll be the first to say that some stars won the red carpet while others did not live up to our expectations. We’ll let the professionals judge some of the past year’s hottest box office hits, but we can judge the red carpet looks of the night, from the comfort of our own couches.

Nailed It

Brie Larson

First up, we have the wonderfully talented Brie Larson. She glittered on the red carpet in this cape and gown situation. Perhaps it was a nod to her Captain Marvel character, Carol Danvers.

Natalie Portman in Dior

The red carpet is a place to make a statement, and Natalie Portman sure did with this Dior look. Her cape was lined with the names of the female directors who were snubbed by the Academy this year. On top of her badassery, one can never go wrong on Hollywood’s biggest night, with black and gold.

Florence Pugh in Louis Vuitton

Much like her character in “Little Women,” Florence Pugh never shies away from being bold. This Louis Vuitton look is definitely one of the more unique looks of this night, but Pugh owns it. And that hue is gorgeous against the deep red carpet.

Rebel Wilson in Jason Wu

Rebel Wilson looked like a statuette herself in this golden Jason Wu gown. On the red carpet is where you should be breaking out your shiniest of things. Wilson and Wu did a job well done on this one.

Janelle Monae

Even more glitter! Janelle Monae almost always out dresses every other star on the carpet. And, the rocks around her fingers don’t make for a bad addition!

Kristin Cavallari in Valdrin Sahiti

If we had to pick a winner from tonight’s award ceremony, it would be this Valdrin Sahiti gown worn by Kristin Cavallari. It’s a quintessential Oscar dress—she looks like a modern day Cinderella. We just hope she doesn’t lose whatever slippers are hiding under there!

Lilly Singh in Adeam

We love a sophisticated pantsuit. Lilly Singh showed up to the red carpet in a deceiving look. Is it a gown? A two-piece set? It’s actually neither! This Adeam look features a pantsuit with a removable belted skirt. Tasteful and versatile.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

This simple look on Margot Robbie isn’t as over-the-top-Oscars as most looks are, but she just looks so breathtaking in this Chanel look. The billowy ribbons tied around her arms are akin to a cape. Are we sensing a trend?

Mindy Kaling in Dolce & Gabbana

Mindy Kaling’s yellow gown is a sophisticated and classic silhouette. This look is super quintessential Oscars! The Chopard jewels are the icing on the cake.

Charlize Theron in Dior

A long train and one shoulder neckline compliments Charlize Theron so well. There’s nothing little about this black dress, accessorized with Tiffany & Co. jewels. Like, come on!

Failed It

Penelope Cruz in Chanel

This Chanel dress is reminiscent of a prom or bridesmaid dress from the early 2000s. The red carpet is not the place to revisit this era of fashion. Sorry, Penelope.

Saoirse Ronan in Valentino

We’re not really sure if it’s the mix of fabric or tablecloth vibes we’re getting from this look, but we know that Saoirse Ronan has rocked better looks than this Gucci one.

Maya Rudolph

In this orange gown Maya Rudolph looked a little too much like the Columbia Studios ad you see right before the movie starts.

Olivia Coleman in Christopher Kane

Another cape! But Olivia Coleman didn’t take the cake in this Christopher Kane one. There is too much going on in the front for us to appreciate the navy train.

Kelly Marie Tran in Schiaparelli

This dropped waist silhouette is dropped way too low on Kelly Marie Tran. The pattern on the neckline of the dress seems out of place, too.

Beanie Feldstein in Miu Miu

All we can think about when we see this Miu Miu gown is Betty Draper, not Beanie Feldstein. The 2020 Oscars are not the time or place for this dress.

Giuliana Rancic in Atelier Zuhra

Can you believe that two prom-esque looks made it to the red carpet of the Academy Awards? Sorry, Giuliana Rancic, but you’ve rocked posher dresses.

Blac Chyna in Donna Matotoshi

A lot of people on the Internet wanted to know why and how Blac Chyna was at the Oscars. We just want to know why her stylist made this pick!
