Who Nailed It, and Failed It, At The 2019 Golden Globes....
The Golden Globes arrived this year, and these celebrities did not come to play! This year, stars took to the red carpet with looks galore! Some excelled and some fell unfathomably flat. Filled with ruffles, glitter, and a slew of patterns and designs, some of these A-listers killed it, and some, unfortunately, looked a complete and total mess!
Best Dressed
The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira Killed It With This Red Masterpiece
The Black Panther actress looked beautiful in this red Rodarte gown. The dress is stunning, daring, and fit the star perfectly. As soon as I saw her, I knew this image would be etched in my head forever—she looked gorgeous! Gurira also gets points for rocking her natural hair! We stan a naturalista who’s fierce on and off the screen!
2. Saoirse Ronan’s Unforgettable Gucci Gown
I am still swooning over this dress! It’s so breathtaking! The dress softly accentuates the Mary Queen of Scots star in a way that’s simple but completely hypnotizing. Everything seems to come together perfectly—the deep v cut, the material, her pulled back hairstyle. This look is one that I won’t be forgetting any time soon.
3. Pose’s Indya Moore is ready to slay in this fashionable warrior fit
Indya Moore is utterly divine! When I saw her walk the red carpet in this Louis Vuitton piece, I literally had to catch my breath. The breakout star chose to remove the lining from this futuristic garb to let the world know that her body is political—she is political. It’s also worth mentioning that the entire cast of Pose showed up and showed out!
4. Lady Gaga’s Homage to Judy Garland’s A Star Is Born
Two things here. The first is that Lady Gaga looked like a vision of perfection in this periwinkle dress. The second is that the A Star Is Born actress apparently didn’t realize she was paying homage to Judy Garland, the original star of the widely successful film! The universe is magical, sometimes isn’t it? She also didn’t let the oversized Valentino gown overtake her which could’ve easily happened to another star. Then again, Lady Gaga once wore a dress made of meat and owned it—is there anything that can overpower her?
5. Kiki Layne Looked Like a Beale Street Princess in Pink
Kiki Layne, star of the Barry Jenkins’ rendition of Baldwin’s book If Beale Street Could Talk, looks like the epitome of a Disney princess in this Dior dress. The prepubescent version of myself daydreamed of looking like that as a princess. The pale pink, the perfect amount of poof, the simple but powerful jewelry—Little Milan is swooning!
6. Regina King dazzles in Alberta Ferretti
Regina King was beautiful in this shimmering Alberta Ferretti gown. I had to a double take when I saw her! While King was undoubtedly gorgeous, her winning speech also touched the hearts of women both in the audience and out. She vowed to only produce projects with 50% women and encouraged listeners to do the same!
7. Gemma Chan Wore Shorts and it Worked
It’s not often someone wears shorts to the Golden Globes. It’s even rarer when someone does it and it works! Crazy Rich Asians star, Gemma Chan, wore this blue Valentino outfit and not only did it work, it excelled! She looked amazing. If you can wear shorts and you can wear it like that, please do more of it!
8.Sandra Oh Looked Oh So Beautiful in This Versace Gown!
Sandra Oh had not one fashion success this night. She had, not two, fashion successes. Sandra Oh had three!!! She first arrived in a floor-length white Versace gown—if I did nothing in life but wear that beautiful, beautiful dress, I’d die a happy girl. She then had an outfit change and wore a striking red blazer-dress. She followed that up by giving her acceptance speech in a white and Stella McCartney dress. Oh also made history as the first actress of Asian descent to win the award for best actress in a television series—yes, in 2019!
9. Lupita Nyong’o Can Do No Wrong
Dressed in Calvin Klein, Nyong’o looked exquisite, as always. The purple dress was somehow both simple and the opposite of simple all at once. Nyong’o has this graceful and elegant presence in everything she does, wear, and says (can you tell I’m a complete Lupita Nyong’o fanatic). This time is no different. Again, Lupita Nyong’o can do no wrong.
10. Irina Shayk Made Bradley Cooper Look Like an Accessory
If this was supposed to a Bradley moment, his supermodel girlfriend stole the show! Cooper and Shayk arrived but honestly, this seemed like the Shayk Show! The Russian model was in a Versace gown that was absolutely fabulous. I found myself saying “Geez, Bradley, can you move out of the way?” Sorry Brad!
Worst Dressed
Kate Mara Missed the Mark
Mara’s peach gown seemed a bit ill-fitting. It made her look a tad frumpy, which is hard to do considering the dress aptly showed her cleavage. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the hairstyle the actress paired with her peach frock.
2. Sorry Sofia! I’m Just Not Feeling It!
Sofia Carson looked gorgeous from the shoulders up. But the dress was so busy, it was distracting. There was mesh. There were ruffles. There were bows. It was a lot. There are also six words you never want to hear about your look—it looked better on the runway. The Giambattista Valli was indeed busy on the runway, but it looked better somehow. With Carson, unfortunately, It seemed like the dress was wearing her and not the other way around.
3. Rachel Weisz Did Not Make a Wise Decision with This One
Nominated for her role in “The Favourite,” Weisz took to the carpet with a white and black ruffled dress. The dress didn’t seem like it fit together. The white ruffles at the top didn’t pair well with the simple black skirt at the bottom. While not horrible, this outfit still didn’t make me gasp and beg for more like my favorite looks did.
4. Emma Stone was a Bit Bland With Her Golden Globes Fit
Hollywood’s favorite redhead wore a dress reminiscent of old Hollywood glam. For some reason, however, the look fell flat. It was a bit unremarkable, or even boring. I get where she was going with this one, but it just didn’t stick the landing.
5. Claire Foy’s Yellow Dress is Not One Fit for a Queen
To be fair, I almost liked this look! The yellow was pretty, and Claire Foy looked absolutely stunning from the waist up. But then as my eyes traced the dress lower and lower, they landed on that awkward train. The awkwardness of the train, paired with the silver decorations at the bottom reminded me of something I’d see in a prom dress shop, not a red carpet for the Golden Globes.
6. Nicole Kidman’s Deep Maroon Dress Was Deeply Unattractive to Me
This wasn’t the worst outfit on the red carpet, at all. But somehow, I just kept looking at it and hearing Joan Rivers in my ear saying, “she looks like a purple condom.” Also, what’s up with these celebrities and these ill-fitting garments! Y’all are rich for crying out loud!
7. Anne Hathway, Was This a Nod to the Cheetah Girls?
I love The Cheetah Girls as much as the next guy, but unless you’re auditioning for the role of a 5th Cheetah Girl in a reboot (that we neither want nor need) from the childhood classic, this look was not it. Despite the daring leopard print, Anne still looked striking—again, from the shoulder up.
8. Debra Messing’s Dress Was a Mess
A hot one at that! I’m sick of these celebs looking beautiful in the face, having gorgeous hair and makeup. and then looking crazy from the neck down! Make it stop! This dress was a shingly, shimmery black and silver mess. I don’t mean to be harsh, but the only good thing I have to say about this dress is that at least someone (Messing) liked it.
9. Amber Heard Looked Beautiful Until You Saw the Dress
I won’t repeat that same phrase for the 100th time because I’m sure you’re sick of reading it just as much as I’m sick of typing it. But this Monique Lhullier dress didn’t do Heard justice at all. The proportions don’t flatter her, it just looks awkward and discomforting.
10. Amy Adams Bores Us All in Blue Dress
There’s nothing wrong with simple. In fact, some of the best looks can be simple, but powerful, ones. However, this dress Amy Adams wore is simple and boring. It looks like something you could get at Macy’s! The top is gorgeous—the cut fell perfectly on Adams—but then it becomes a boring blue mess of a dress as it passes the waist. You deserve better, Amy!
