Steal The Makeup Looks: Democratic Boss Babe Edition

By Claudia Langella

Whoever said that beauty and power don’t mix hasn’t met the women of the Democratic Party. Makeup is nothing to be ashamed of, and quite frankly there is nothing like a woman in power who knows her worth is not defined by her appearance. We rounded up six female Democrats who know how to hold the Senate floor and to perfectly apply winged eyeliner.

There is no shame in wanting to put on a little glam for work, whether you’re making waves in Washington D.C. or commuting from your bedroom to the kitchen. The extra fifteen minutes you spend on yourself in the morning can make a world of difference when you go about your day.

Beauty comes from within, not from major marketing campaigns. Be sure to spend time working on positive self-talk, too, because what’s on the outside should always reflect what you’re presenting to the world. If these busy women have time for it, so do you.

You have the right to wear as little or as much makeup as you want, so practice it! Check out our product recommendations below for a flawless beat that will last all day long.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez serves New York’s 14th congressional district. As the youngest member of Congress, she knows that the spotlight is on her. In a recent Vogue video, she shared her love of makeup.

“If I’m going to spend an hour doing my glam, it’s because I feel like it,” she exclaimed. “My body, my choice!”

AOC does not shy away from glitter because it makes her feel better on the inside. She tops off her look with her signature red lip—very patriotic.

Kamala Harris

Vice Presidential candidate and California Senator Kamala Harris is usually seen in a natural look. In 2018 she told The Cut that she likes to unwind after a long day with some self care rituals.

“If I’ve had a particularly crazy day, I try to squeeze in a nice hot bath before I go to bed. And I have a hot cup of tea, usually some kind of chamomile.”

We can only imagine that her nightly routine is just as important now as it was then as she gears up for the election in November. To achieve her go-to look, try a long-lasting mascara and warm peachy blush.

Kyrsten Sinema

Kyrsten Sinema upset the last election when she won a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona. She’s the first female politician to represent Arizona in the Senate and first openly bisexual senator. With lots on her plate, we would imagine she goes for longwear makeup products. Try a pink lip liner and lipstick, and since she’s almost always sporting her glasses, play up the eyes with some warm hues.

Ayanna Pressley

Ayanna Pressley represents Massachusetts’ 7th district. Pressley is the first Black woman to serve her state in Congress, and beat a ten-term incumbent in 2019! In 2020 she announced that she battles alopecia, a condition in the body where you lose some or all of your body hair. “I want to be freed from the secret and the shame that that secret carries with it,” she said about it in a personal statement. She’s seen often sporting some pretty killer lashes and colorful lipstick. Give them a try for yourself to achieve her glow.

Ilhan Omar

Representative Ilhan Omar holds many “firsts” titles: first Somali-American, first naturalized citizen of African birth and the first woman of color to hold office in Minnesota. She’s received lots of slack from the current president, but does not let that stop her from serving her state.

Go for a beautiful berry lip color and dark eyeliner to achieve her look. Each of these inspiring politicians work long hours, deep into the night, which is why they’ve got a concealer on hand. Pat some under your eyes and you can look like a sleeping beauty, too.
