5 Things You're Doing to Your Skin That's Ruining It
Taking care of your skin is super important. And with so many products on the market, it’s fun to experiment and try new things. But there are little things that you’re probably doing every day that’s ruining your skin! Here are five things you’re probably doing in your everyday skincare routine, that you don’t want to do anymore (and solutions for them!).
You’re Using Makeup Wipes
I can hear the screams now. “But they’re so convenient!! What else am I supposed to use??” There’s quite a few reasons why makeup wipes aren’t what you want to be using on your skin. First off, they’re harsh. They can have some alcohol in them which can dry out your skin, cause irritation, and can cause you to break out. You’re also tugging on your delicate skin when you use them, and that can cause (gasp!) premature wrinkles. No matter how delicate you’re being, it probably just isn’t enough. The worst offense? Using a makeup wipe as your cleanser…sorry girl, but that just isn’t getting all your makeup off.
The Solution
The solution? A double cleanse! Using an oil based cleaner (I love the Drunk Elephant Slaai balm) will melt off all your makeup, and then you can go in and really clean your face with a cleaner.
Using Hot Water to Wash Your Face
I’m super guilty of this. I get cold, and having steamy water feels really good when I wash my face! But this is a big no-no, and actually, cleaning with cold water isn’t any better. Cold water, while refreshing, doesn’t effectively remove daily grime from your face. And hot water can really irritate and dry out your skin. Have you ever washed your face and then felt like your skin was becoming tight and uncomfortable? That’s your skin drying out and begging for moisture.
The Solution
This one is a quick fix: use lukewarm water. It’ll still help to loosen dirt, but it won’t dry out your skin. Easy, not as nice as hot water in the morning, but it’ll help keep your skin looking nicer for longer!
Not Washing Your Makeup Brushes Regularly
Yeah, I’m guilty of this too. I mean it’s such a boring task. But if we break it down, it’s super gross. Makeup brushes are used to buff, swirl and blend products on our faces, and then they sit in our cabinets or on our desks until next time. So that liquid foundation just sits on our brush, collects dust from the day, and then is used the next time we do our makeup. And that process repeats until we’re bothered to wash them.
The Solution:
There’s a couple of things to make this process a little easier. There’s spot cleaner, so you can quickly clean your brushes right after you use them to prolong the washing. There are little rubber mats that help scrub your brushes to get everything out. And also, putting on music or a YouTube Video can help time go by quicker. Now go wash your brushes.
Overusing Moisturizer
This is for my dry skin girls. I know that dry skin can be so annoying, and even painful to deal with. But the answer is not to slather on multiple coats of moisturizer. Using thicker coats is only going to cause clogged pores. Also, you’re wasting product, and you payed good money for that.
The Solution
Instead, using a creamier moisturizer. Bonus points if they literally have “cream” in the name. Try something like First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream or Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream.
Not Wearing Sunscreen
Girl. I don’t even have the time of day to tell you how wrong this is. Do you want wrinkles, your acne scars to get worse, or to potentially get skin cancer??
The Solution
Hell to the no! Get you some sunscreen, and some that is at least 30 SPF and isn’t just in your moisturizer or foundation. And put it on every day, you nut. You’re welcome.
