Updating The Basics: The Pieces That Will Carry You From Summer To Fall

It’s official, my ladies. Summer dresses are going on clearance. The weather is gradually becoming less and less sweatily miserable. And the pumpkin spice latte is BACK. Fall is fast approaching, and it’s time to sweater up.

Literally, that is. Maybe we don’t need to completely haul away your whole summer getup, because it’s still too soon to bundle up all snug-like. Not sure how to kick it with only one foot in the door to fall?

I goes something like this….

Dark Skinnies

Behold, the (what should be) the centerpiece fulcrum upon which your entire closet orbits. A pair of these is an absolute MUST: slimming on all figures, the easiest neutral, appropriate for non-jeans occasions when styled well, and timeless and seasonless. Invest in a good pair and preserve the color by keeping the washes to once every never.

Denim Jacket

This looks just as good on a summery frock, as they do over jeans-sweater-booties combo. Opt for one with strong structure, which pairs well with both feminine and flowy sillhouettes and slimmer-fitting pants.

Maxi Dress

Thin enough material to wear alone, with enough coverage for easy layers underneath. Um, yes please? The maxi dress (or skirt) is the ultimate piece for seasonal versatility. Wear it alone on a toasty day, and when the sun sets, throw on combats and that denim jacket.

Mustard Yellow Top

We saw a lot of this color in the summer this season. A blouse or tank is good for an eye-popping color like mustard because as a smaller piece, it’s quick and easy to pair with a neutral (black pants for work or dark jeans for play.) Mustard also pairs beautifully with other fall colors like maroon and navy.

Chunky Sandals

Too soon for boots? Coupled with that sexy maxi dress of yours and the denim jacket over your shoulders, these shoes give you enough summer vibes to nod to your nostalgic vibes. But you’re ready when it gets chilly.

Point-Toe Nude Flats

See #1. This is the shoe equivalent. The pointed toe elongates your legs (always a yes), an effect further accentuated by a color akin to your complexion. Elegant, chic, and of course, comfortable, they are the best win-win-win for your feet. Just watch the toe cleavage – not cute.

Nude Nails

Speaking of nudes…Did you know, the Royal Family is only permitted to wear nude colors on their nails? Take a page out of their regal handbook and do the same. Keep your hands polished (also nothing’s nastier to look at than chipped dark fingernails) and “mad fem” with a “gorg af neutral”. Chinchilla by Essie, anyone?? (Rumor has it that the Queen’s favorite is Ballet Slippers…)

See? Easy peasy. While no one’s pulling out their down coats and heavy snow boots (ew please not yet), it’s still time to let go of our white shoes (howdy, Labor Day) and tank tops. Ring in the leafy new season in the best way!
