$1,000 Velcro Rubber Slab…Diesel Skirt...Whaaat?

By Isabella Capponi

It’s a new week. Which means there’s a new fashion trend circling throughout social media. The newest piece to raise eyebrows and opinions is the Diesel B-Berny Belt Miniskirt.

A “one size fits all” Velcro strapped belt designed by Diesel is the most sought after piece for the fashion it girl. Well, maybe the *rich* fashion it girl because this piece will cost you upwards of $1375 if you order it from SSENSE. Besides the high price tag, there are a number of other problems with this trending piece.

To start off, the actual look of the skirt is a distressed brown leather strip with the Diesel logo. To take the piece off and on, it has a regular old slab of Velcro. Consumers are concerned with the value of this piece for such a high price tag.

According to Twitter user @FASHI0NWH0RE “Even if the Diesel skirt says it has velcro on the product description on the website…it should NOT be velcro omg!!! It’s a ~$1K+ piece from a reputable high end fashion house that has MORE than enough money for that. I’ve been saying this forever, quality means nothing anymore.”

Have quality reputable fashion brands taken a turn for the worse? Is luxury less luxurious than it used to be? TikToker @ageorama went viral for reviewing the skirt in the past week and her thoughts support this claim.

“For 1,000 dollars I just wish it came in maybe like a little dust bag or something but they kind of just like sloppily threw it in this box,” she says while unboxing the coveted piece.

She goes on to review the item saying it feels more like rubber than leather and the velcro closure brings down the quality of the piece. She took it for a test wear around the city and her expectations were not met.

“It was just so impractical. I had to go home after 20 minutes and change.”

The Tiktoker then goes on to address the problem that most people have with this item. The size.

“It’s literally not size inclusive. If you’re bigger than a size double 00 you’re gonna see this fucking Velcro. It also kind of makes gaps on the body weird.”

One size never fits all. It's an outdated term, yet still so many brands are trying to market off of this phrase when in reality, they are just being lazy and not making a full size run. Or maybe they are just bad people and only want double zero people to wear their clothes.

Either way, this trending skirt is bringing attention to the problems that are still occurring in the fashion industry including lack of size, inclusivity and diminished luxury quality.
