The mob wife trend is a resurgence of large fur coats, huge teased hair, black stilettos and flashy gold jewelry with inspiration taken from popular media like the Sopranos, The Godfather, Casino, and more. It’s a complete flip from the coquette style trend that is defined by shades of pinks, ribbon and pretty lace.
This fashion trend is loud and bold.
More than just the style choices, the mob wife trend is all about the attitude and mindset as well. It highlights the women who are demanding and witty, intelligent and bossy, and most of all, very confident.

The mob wife aesthetic goes deeper than just clothing and styling. The word “wife” is important in this trend. These female “mob wife” characters in film and television who are married to dangerous men are often treated poorly and although they have money and materialistic items, there is a lack of emotional connection in these relationships, and in some depictions as well, physical abuse.
There is also the double standard of the gaudy vibe of the mob wife aesthetic. We often see the over-the-top style deemed fashionable and fabulous when the upper class do it, but tacky and try-hard when the lower class partake. The mob wife aesthetic is upper class style because of the white collar crime salary to afford this luxurious style.

Mob wife is also connected to the New Jersey style, which as we’ve seen in media like Jersey Shore, carries a certain negative connotation. The difference between the “clean girl” upper class and the mob wife upper class is imminent in the media, but also in society. People turn their noses up to those who are loud in the way they express themselves. Jennifer Lawrence’s character in American Hustle is a great example of the complexity of a mob wife character.
