Sugarcoated BS: The Bachelor's Victoria Fuller's Apology for "White Lives Matter" Scandal
This past Saturday, The Bachelor’s Victoria Fuller apologized on her Instagram story for being involved with a clothing brand that had the slogan “ White Lives Matter.” You will see the reality celeb decked out in full red, white, and blue; giving off the girl next door vibes.
Before I dissect this, here are the facts that will also reveal multiple red flags, one being confederate. First, one of the brands slogan is about “ White Lives Matter” The brand says it’s pertaining to the White Marlin fish. Second, there are confederate flag logos within the brand. Let's break that down, these are two definitive facts one can see before making any commitments. Dissecting this problem to the root, there is the blind entitlement that is anchored within our society.
The verbiage, Black lives matter is not to be used for any other form than the movement that it was created for. It’s not the band-aid term where all “awareness moments” are to be blanketed by “ ( insert cause) lives matter.” The slogan represents human lives of a certain race, that have been taken away in escalated numbers by police brutality for decades. Using that phrase and inserting a different cause like “to bring awareness” to a fish is showing the lack of understanding or support to the original movement. The brand’s use of the confederate flag only solidified the ties to racial discrimination that is associated with the slogan used; progressive clothing labels don’t rep confederate flags.
Victoria’s apology was in her Instagram story. HeR StOry. The delivery of her apology was political, she stated that “ This has truly been an educational moment for me and I hope to be a voice against racism...” Listen Victoria, you have to first understand the voice you’re talking about before chiming in. That’s what got you into this mess in the first place...not being aware. There is no excuse or any room for a justifiable educational moment, there were too many signs. Sorry not sorry.
Oh, and what did the bachelor Peter Weber have to say? Good question, Peter said, “ shes not perfect, I’m not perfect, no one is perfect.” Sir, no one is talking about perfection, we are talking about being aware of the political climate and consideration of how others feel. People work so hard for the spotlight to only act like they never asked for the responsibility.
