Quarantine Style: Why Women Are Substituting Their Sweats For House Dresses
We’re a month into our coronavirus quarantine, a very long one, a that! While essential workers (shout out to the healthcare and grocery store workers everywhere!) bravely head off to work in the morning, the rest of the country works from the comfort of their homes. Day after day, we follow the same routine and don’t find a need to put ourselves together for the day—who’s going to see us anyway? Sweats are the easiest thing to pull on once you roll out of bed in the morning. But, what if there was something that was easier to pull on than sweatpants and made you feel put together, and pretty? We present to you the ‘house dress.’
Designed for the typical 1950s housewife, the house dress combines functionality and style, allowing you to feel a bit more put together while you get your shit done! Refinery 29 co-founder Christine Barberich writes, “The House Dress isn’t a ‘style’ so much as a calling—commanding we lay claim to our homes and our work, whatever that may be, in a serious way, unencumbered by super-cinched waists, zippers, or, God forbid, a big ruffle that might make it tricky to climb a ladder or sit for three straight hours on Zoom calls.”
So, while the war against the coronavirus wages on, you can still express yourself through your style—from home. You’ll feel put together, and maybe the days will start to fly by instead. Before you know it, you’ll be sporting your favorite summer sundresses. Until then, try our picks below for some spring fashion inspiration.
