Maya Rockeymoore Cummings To Run For Late Husband's Seat
Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the widow of the late, and influential representative Elijah Cummings, has announced her plans to continue her husband’s legacy by seeking out the seat left behind in the upcoming election.
Ms. Cummings ,who has also served as the Maryland democratic party chair woman has every intention of stepping down from the position in order to avoid speculations of favoritism.
She has revealed in numerous interviews that she and her husband had conversations about this prior to his death on Oct.17th, with his wishes for her to succeed him.
“He wanted me to continue this fight and I’m going to continue this fight and run the race, and prayerfully, win,” Rockeymoore Cummings told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.
In the midst of her campaign announcement on Tuesday, the candidate also stated that she's having a preventative double mastectomy on Friday. It was a decision made months in advance with her husband's support ( she’ll take two to four weeks off then kick off her campaign in December).
Ultimately, if elected, the Democrat is set to tackle issues with Social Security, gun violence, ending disparities in education, to name a few.
