Jenna Ortega Brings Goth Fashion Back To The Limelight

By Iris Stigell

How one of the best shows of the year, “Wednesday”, is causing goth to make a serious comeback on the runway and the streets.

The creepy, yet brilliant Addams Family-adjacent show, ‘Wednesday’, features Jenna Ortega as a haunted young girl, attending Nevermore Academy. Like most of Tim Burton’s work, this show too doesn’t cease to impress upon its audience through its sinister beauty. Influencing beyond its intended young audience, the show has managed to trickle all the way down to fashion week and the streets.

Goth is all about dark, dramatic silhouettes that create an atmosphere of mystery and murky elegance. Taking its inspiration from punk and Victorian era lace and corsets, the show takes goth to a new, modern place, leaving the young generation seemingly obsessed. Costume designer, Colleen Atwood, successfully blends Y2K fashion with goth’s classic elements, taking the trend to a place of evil academia.

We have seen the goth trend making its way into influencer and model’s closets for quite some time now, one of them being Miss Bella Hadid, who often combines preppy with a dark Victorian aesthetic. As for the runway, take a look at Rick Owens fall/winter funeral inspired garments, as well as Balmain’s totally black filled silhouettes. Versace was another who took the goth trend all the way and ran with it, with its black and purple color palette.

Introducing goth into your own wardrobe isn’t as tricky as you may think! Its main player is intersecting textures, such as lace, leather, and silk. Think floor length, dramatic shapes, with a touch of vampire chic when it comes to hair and makeup.
