ICYMI: DC Swim Week Preview Show

Alright babes, I’ve got some exclusive content for you that you’re not going to want to miss. This Saturday, June 10th, I had the pleasure of attending the preview for DC Swim Week, DC’s premier swimwear fashion week. The sneak peek took place at the Kimpton Donovan hotel and was supposed to be held at the swanky venue’s rooftop pool, but alas, the weather knows no favorites. A gloomy, rainy Sunday forced organizers to move the show to a room in the lobby.

The decorations were cute and beachy, with an area for pictures, but I can’t help but think the rooftop pool would have truly set things over the top. If there was a thing the ambiance was missing, it would have easily been found by sitting poolside with a rooftop view of the DC skyline. It would’ve also been a touch more spacious which would have really been an added benefit, given we could sometimes see the models running back and forth while preparing for the show. That aside, we can’t predict the weather, we can only adapt.

Now, about the show. The DJ, DJ Cheick Me Out, was amazing. I was getting all types of summer vibes and dancing in my seat the entire time. Seriously, the man somehow managed to seamlessly mix in Summertime Magic by Childish Gambino, Maria Maria by Carlos Santana, Electric Feel by MGMT, and add in icons like Sade, Prince, and the King of Pop. He also played current starlites like Drake, Rihanna, and the Queen Bey herself. It’s not easy to blend genres and moods, but DJ Cheik Me Out’s set was a complete highlight of the night.

Another highlight was the magnetic host. She was funny, engaging, and energetic--everything you want in an emcee. Of course, shows aren’t just dependent on the clothes and the models; all of the miniscule, seemingly unimportant parts play a huge role in the entirety and success of the production. But of course, we can’t forget the meat and potatoes of the show: the designers, models, and swimsuits! Of the more than 40 designers from the upcoming July Swim Week, we got a chance to see five brands from France, New York, Los Angeles, DC, and Canada. Many of the designs were fairly simple and incredibly well-fitting They fit the models’ bodies like gloves and accentuated their figures in the best way possible. There were also a ton of bright colors, some florals, and even some sexy lingerie! The makeup was also gorgeous. Like seriously, y’all. GORGEOUS.

Now, this was only a preview. Five designers can’t even begin to tap into the breadth of designs, models, and figures that we can expect to see. That withstanding, I would’ve loved some more diversity in the models. I’m glad to have seen a good deal of natural-haired and curly babes, but it would have been awesome to see more darker-skinned and curvy girls hit the runway. Come on people! We’re in DC for crying out loud!

Outside of that, I cannot wait for DC Swim Week next month. Mark your calendars off July 25-July 28 and get ready for some fly resortwear, fabulous swimwear, and fierce lingerie! I promise you won’t regret it.
