I Tried Pinterest's Capsule Wardrobe and This is What Happened…

If you’re an avid Pinner, there’s a good chance you’ve seen capsule wardrobe content on your feed. But what the heck is it?!

It isn’t a new fad, even though it’s definitely become more popular in the last year with YouTubers and Pinners alike. The term was coined in the 1970s by Susie Faux, who was the owner of a boutique in London. According to her, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items that don’t go out of fashion and can be augmented by seasonal pieces.

And that idea hasn’t changed. Having a capsule wardrobe is great for cutting down on both your fashion spending and environmental impact. But how realistic is owning a capsule wardrobe?

For seven days, I only wore five pieces of clothing and one pair of shoes. I wanted to challenge myself to stay away from jeans and my usual sweaters because I wear those all the time. So, I chose: a plaid skirt, a sweater, houndstooth trousers, a white button up, and my tried-and-true LBD. For my shoes, I chose my black booties.

This Was My Capsule Wardrobe…

At first, I was really excited and thought this was going to be a no-brainer. I mean, my pieces all went together and everything was versatile, depending on how I layered things. But by the middle of the week, I felt a little uninspired. Enter accessories…

I’m not a big accessory person, but this week I wish I was. Even though I only had a few accessories, by adding a watch or a belt to my outfit, it made it more interesting. Overall, this was a fun experiment and (after the addition of accessories) thought my outfits were different enough day-to-day that it didn’t feel like I was wearing the same stuff over and over again. So, is it realistic? Absolutely. But is it for the fashion-lover and trend-setter? Not so much.  I’m not sure I would do this on a regular basis (I LOVE shoes) but for traveling, this is something I think works perfectly.
