Flying Fabulously: Why I Only Wear Heels to the Airport
Wearing heels while flying always gets a bad rap. Airport fashion guides always snidely say heels are not the way to go, either stating to be comfy on the flight or straight up saying wearing heels is high maintenance. And who wants to be labeled high maintenance?
Uh, hi, I do. First off: high maintenance isn’t a bad thing. And second off: how can a slip-on shoe be high maintenance? I can slip my heels off just like I would my sneakers, or my loafers, or flats. They gives me height, which for me, is also practical.
I’m pretty short. I didn’t use to think this until I couldn’t reach my luggage in the overhead bin by myself. Sure, tossing it up there is the easy part. But standing on my tippy-toes in my flats, desperately grabbing for the handle on my bag isn’t a cute look. I’m a grown woman, I don’t want to be looking like a little girl trying to reach for some cookies on the kitchen counter. Wearing heels helps me avoid that, and I don’t hold up the plane either, so you’re welcome everyone!
Another reason? Heels are expensive. I had a lost luggage scare once where I nearly lost a few of my expensive heels (among other important things). It was Carrie Bradshaw who said, “I like my money where I can see it: hanging in my closet.” And I now take that into consideration: my expensive things will fly next to me on the plane so I know where they’ll be when I land. And that includes my heels.
If you want to wear heels to the airport: wear them. They’re practical, and if you’re like me, comfortable. And even if you’re the only one wearing them, wear them with confidence because at least you’ll be flying fabulously.
