NYFW: Nicole Miller's Forward-Looking Retrospective for Fall 2019
Nicole Miller’s Fall 2019 collection is the embodiment of relevant ready-to-wear that speaks right to the heart of fashion-forward, eco-conscious millennial and Gen X consumers. She mixes a masterful blend of the ever-loved and currently-trending 1990s grunge aesthetic, elevated details and fabrication, and pleasantly surprising sustainability practices including upcycled cashmere sweaters and denim made from recycled soda bottles. The result: a fun, youthfully offbeat, environmentally responsible, and highly wearable collection. Miller offered up an invigorating way to revisit an alluringly angsty era with less of the angst and more of the allure. Seriously, I’d wear just about every piece.
Beanies and Boots, And Don’t Forget A Familiar Plaid
Black beanies, strong combat boots, and plaid prints reminiscent of the flannel shirts that cocooned my youth invoked a pleasing nostalgia.
Funky Fur Fabrication
Faux fur trim is totally of-the-moment. It can and often does look cheap and kitschy. Nicole Miller made it both worthy of the runway and easily wearable off the rack.
Spaghetti Straps and Tank Dresses
Long slinky dresses are so 90s! Especially when constructed with spaghetti straps or a sleeveless tank cut. A black sleeveless dress layered over plaid-printed sheer long sleeves and tie-dyed tights was the cherry on top of this refreshing 90s style indulgence.
Eco-Consciousness Is Cool
Tailored cashmere sweaters and functional distressed denim prove upcycled fabrics and recycled plastic can make for some really cool clothes.
