NYFW: Tripping Out with Prabal Gurung for Fall 2019

Showing women’s and men’s together, Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2019 runway took us on a globetrotting trip to India, Nepal, China, and beyond. Gurung spent much of 2018 jet-setting across the globe to design wedding gowns and bridal party attire, attend photo exhibitions, and one can only imagine what other super-cool-super-artsy industry engagements. He brought an array of exotic inspiration back home to New York to inform his new collection, which he called, “Suitcases of the World,” commenting to press that people are more alike than we are different.

There was a lot of snazzy-South-Asian-cosmopolitan with extravagant ikat and brocade prints and sari draped dresses. Gurung offered some familiarity with relatively American themes like dramatic color blocking in bright, bold shades; and streetwear looks composed of cargo pants and fuzzy sweaters. He gave us cocktail, red carpet, runway, and street all in one collection. Suspending judgment on things like cohesion and messaging, the collection sure makes for fun fashion perusing!

IKAT AND INDIAN VARANASI BROCADE

Gurung brought his travels to the catwalk in prints that speak beautifully of the countries and cultures he visited. The pieces convey a youthful cosmopolitan consciousness.

COLOR BLOCKING...

...is tried and true for making a mark by playing with color while staying relatively straightforward.

SO, CARGO’S ARE ACTUALLY COOL?!

Jeans get tired. It’s fun to try something new. I’m always on the hunt for an alternative go-to pant, but I’ve never understood how to style a cargo. Thanks so much, Prabal, I think I get it now!!
