8 Homemade Hair Masks That Are Better Than A Day At The Salon

Fall is when your hair can start to feel a bit brittle in the cool weather. This time of year your hair  is prone to split ends. Now is the time to take extra care of your locks at least once a week. An easy solution to keeping your hair its healthiest  is hair masks! These hair masks can be made at home (double plus!). So, there is no excuse not to give yourself an at home salon day! You know you deserve it! Check out these gorgeous hair masks that will have your fall mane feeling soft and looking healthy! 

Double Yellow Mask

If you are prone to dull and thinning hair, then you will want to mix up an egg and lemon hair mask. This mask will give your hair the shine you always have dreamt of. This mask will control hair fall out effortlessly. Oh, and if you have dandruff...it will take care of that, too!

The ingredients you need are:

  • 2 whole eggs

  • 2 tsp plain yogurt 

  • As much lemon juice as you can squeeze from a lemon

  • 2 tsp caster oil

Mix this magical concoction up. Start by adding the mixture to sections of your hair. Make sure to apply generous amounts to the ends of your hair. You are going to want to leave this mask on for at least an hour, so be sure to plan ahead to make sure you have enough time. Wash off with cold water when you’re ready. Make sure to apply once a week and you will notice results within a month of this routine.

Jack-O-Lantern Mask

If you didn’t know - pumpkin is jam packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants, magnesium, and potassium. All these equal benefits for your hair. This is a great mask to help with the damage to your hair caused by the sun. With the addition of coconut oil you will receive the antifungal and antibacterial solutions (bye, bye dandruff!). 

The ingredients you need are:

  • 1 can pumpkin puree 

  • ¼ cup coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp honey 

All you have to do is mix the ingredients together and whisk. The end result should be similar to the consistency of your regular conditioner. Section your hair into 4 pieces and apply mixture. Leave the mixture on 30 minutes and wash out with shampoo. Repeat this process once a week and you will notice results shortly thereafter! You can even freeze the rest of the mixture to apply in the following weeks! 

Wild About Avocado Mask

Avocados have so many benefits. These benefits include moisturizing the skin and giving life to your dry hair. These benefits are super important when temperatures are dropping. With the addition of olive oil, you are going to get major shine and strong hair from root to end. Olive oil helps to protect the keratin of the hair, too! 

The ingredients you need are:

  • 2 avocados 

  • 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil 

  • A shower cap

Mash up avocados into a smooth consistency and add the 2 tsp of virgin olive oil. You can apply this mixture to wet or dry hair. Cover with a shower cap for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Apply once a week for best results! 

The Big Three Mask

This hair care routine incorporates 3 major beauty helpers: coconut oil, jojoba oil, and peppermint essential oil. Jojoba oil is going to make your hair super hydrated while promoting hair thickness. The peppermint essential oil will promote hair growth and smells incredible! Coconut oil is going to help hydrate your hair and help soften your locks. 

The ingredients you need are:

  • ¼ cup coconut oil 

  • 2 drops of jojoba oil

  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil 

Mix ingredients together. Apply to hair. Leave on for 20 minutes and wash out with cool water. Added bonus is that you can use this for a divine shaving cream! 

Cheers for Caster Oil Mask


Castor oil has been used in the beauty world seemingly forever. Benefits of this natural ingredient include: antibacterial properties, antifungal properties, minerals, Vitamin E protein, Omega 6, and Omega 9 (We’re out of breath).  

The ingredients you need are:

  • 1 tbsp Olive oil

  • 1 tbsp Mustard oil

  • 1 tbsp Castor oil

Mix ingredients together in equal parts. Apply directly to hair. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave mixture on for 30 minutes. Apply once a week for super shiny and healthy hair! 

Banana, Oh Na Na! Mask

For hair as shiny and luxurious as Camila Cabello, try out a banana hair mask! This mask incorporates bananas (duh), plain yogurt, rose water and lemon juice. Benefits of banana include moisturizing your scalp, helping with hair elasticity and softening your hair. 

The ingredients you need are:

  • 1 banana 

  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt

  • 3 drops of rose water

  • 1 freshly squeezed lemon  

First you will want to mash the banana up. Second, add remaining ingredients. Mix until you have a creamy paste. Apply to your hair for about 1 hour. Rinse with cool water. Repeat 1-2 times a week to achieve the benefits!

Calling All Coffee Fans Mask

I bet you didn’t know that coffee you’re drinking, right now could do wonders for your hair! Take your morning cup of joe to the next level with this coffee themed hair mask. Caffeine has the benefit of stimulating the hair follicle to promote thicker hair. The yogurt in this mask will help with hair that feels greasy. 

The ingredients you need are: 

  • 1 tbsp instant coffee powder

  • 1 tsp castor oil

  • 1 tsp extra virgin raw coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp yogurt

Add oils to coffee powder and blend until smooth. Add the yogurt and mix it thoroughly. Apply to hair. Massage into your hair for about a minute. Wrap hair in a damp towel and leave on for an hour to two hours. Wash out with cool water, shampoo and condition as normal. Apply one time a week for rocking results! 

Milk & Honey Mask

This hair mask is super easy, but really effective. If you have damaged hair, then this will do wonders for your locks. Honey reduces breakage. Honey will also strengthen hair follicles. The benefits of milk will make your hair softer and smooth.

The ingredients you need are: 

  • 2 cups milk

  • 2 tsp honey

  • 1 shower cap

You will want to start by warming milk in the microwave. Add honey until fully dissolved inside milk. You will want to pour this mixture over your dry hair. You will then place a shower cap over your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse this mask out with cool water and shampoo and condition as normal. You can apply this twice a week and you will start to notice products after a few uses.
