Yes 'Harriet' ! Cynthia Erivo To Play Harriet Tubman In Upcoming Biopic
Finally! A little under a month ago, the trailer for Harriet starring Cynthia Erivo made strides with the trailer- which is well deserved. The Tony Award Winner plays the abolitionist hero , meandering through the terrifying journey from runaway slave, to American hero via the Underground Railroad.
In the initial moments of the trailer, it shows Harriet’s initial escape, running away from a malevolent slave owner and confronting the unknown.
Using the north star and the river as her guide, she manages to make it out of the south end and counter William Still. Still, an abolitionist based out of Philadelphia who helps fugitive slaves find the freedom they deserve. It doesn’t take much longer for Tubman to realize that she has to go back and hopefully her family and other enslaved people. She is aided by Marie (played by Janelle Monae), a free black woman who helped train and arm Tubman for the journey she’s going to embark on.
Furthermore, the biopic will also incorporate other parts of Tubman’s life , including her tragic romance with former husband John Tubman (who married someone else after she initially escaped), as well as leading a section of the Union Army during the civil war . In an interview at Vanity Fair, Erivo made a promise that the movie would offer the bigger picture of the icon, focusing on the human aspects of her life that tend to get glossed over . A depiction of her life, and the trials and tribulations she faced has been long overdue . The film hits theaters November 1st.
